Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Thomas Cirignano moved to South Boston as a young man and took over his father's auto repair business. His decades running that shop in the heart of "Southie" would be described as surreal by most people's standards. Through pure luck, he survived numerous life threatening situations. Upon leaving Southie in 1987, Tom relocated to Florida for eleven years before returning to Massachusetts in 1998.
Tom authored two books. His autobiography, titled, The Constant Outsider: Memoirs of a South Boston Mechanic, gives readers a chilling look at what went on in South Boston during the 1970s and '80s, the era of mobster "Whitey" Bulger's reign of terror," as Tom calls it. My friends and family were always riveted by the stories I would tell them about my experiences while living and working in Southie. They kept insisting, "These things don't happen to ordinary people! You need to write a book!" After reading "Black Mass" that suggestion became a reality. I realized that people would be interested in hearing what it was like coexisting in such a violent and volatile environment while doing my best not to become directly involved in the criminal activity. It was a slippery road, and I have to admit, I was no angel. (less)
