There is absolutely no way that I could give this book any less than five stars. If you're an avid watcher of my Youtube channel you got to watch me experience and fall head over heels in love with A big Ship at the Edge of the Universe (the first volume to this series) by author Alex White. There is so much I want to say about this book, but I'll try to stick to non-spoiler things, because everyone needs to read these books.

Firstly this volume picks up seamlessly from where A Big Ship leaves of

"It swung a claw at her, arms extending like a bullwhip crack, and Nilah leapt off one of the shelves to get clear. Her calf muscle seared with pain as knifelike claws grazed her skin, tearing her pant leg. She landed hard, but soundly, and dashed off after Boots and Aisha.

The song positively cooed with bloodlust."

If you read my review for A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe, you'll know that it was one of my favorite reads this year. I mean.. I flailed hard over it. Wicked hard! It

Alright 4.5. I almost gave this book a 4* because it suffers from being the 2nd book in a series where the first book is one of my favorite books of the year. The book starts off a bit slow and unfortunately follows the traditional path of explaining the back story as the novel unfolds. This is one of my pet peeves these days and I prefer a quick recap chapter and then being dropped into the story.
Once I got away from that though the book is just so damned entertaining and action packed that I

More “Firefly” meets Jack Vance’s “Demon Princes” series, with nonstop action and wow, a LOT of explosions and gruesome injuries. One character says it all: “With all the stupid crap we do, it’s amazing we made it this far.” I do wish that the author would stop killing off cast members...still, I can’t wait for the next episode. Here’s what some other characters say:

“I’m not putting love handles on my killbot.”

All of her plans came to: Step one—the crew arrives; step two—explosions happen; step

A thrilling sequel to my favorite sci-fi read of the year. Which makes Bad Deal another favorite sci-fi of the year. I will have more words to add to this later, but for now, all I can say is: READ THIS BOOK!

That is all.

The second book in Alex White's The Salvagers series lacks a bit of the, well, magic of the first--we already know the characters and the world, so there's less of a sense of discovery in this one--but makes up for it with a tighter plot with a well-defined antagonist who's less nebulous than the mysterious group the heroes were just coming to learn about in the first novel.

White's writing continues to be confident, his pacing strong, and his characters compelling. As I said in my review of the

I adore the first book in this series. Here's a relevant part of my review for it: "Fast and furious, we get space battles, planet battles, magic battles, fisticuffs, and more. I devoured all the breakneck action scenes. Another note of interest is that this book mixes a sci-fi space setting with a cool magic system." The second book is almost as fun though gets bogged down more often. Less brilliant than the first book, this one is still fun; fun and endearing enough that I'll probably finish t ...more

Summary + Thoughts: This is a sequel to A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe. It follows the crew as they go after another member of the conspiracy they uncovered in the first book. While the plot of the first book was a treasure-hunt, this one is a caper. One half of the team infiltrates a cult, while the other half robs a bank, all so that they can sneak their way into an exclusive space-club for the galaxy’s ultra-wealthy and ultra-powerful. All in all, if you liked the first one, you’ll pr ...more

I loved the first book in the Salvagers series (A Big Ship At The End Of The Universe), prompting me to purchase the second book as soon as I finished ABSATEOTU. While I did enjoy the book, there was something missing: the feel of Firefly, which was a selling point of one review of the first book.

While I understand the stakes getting higher with the protagonists schemes, this book really had a change in tone. Still lighthearted in parts, it dipped too often into Simon Green territory: death, de

After gushing about how much I loved A Big Ship at the End of the Universe, I'm thrilled to say that A Bad Deal was the perfect follow-up and now I can gush endlessly about both books, while waiting impatiently for the third. It was the best sequel I could have asked for, furthering the story lines I loved. The characters continued to be developed and grow, and I feel as though I know them and love them all as if they were family. The diversity in the story is lovely, and educational, and never ...more

This is one of those books where the action sequences deliver, and you can actually believe in the team. It reminds me a bunch of early Culture novels, only instead of force fields and minds, you have magic shields and contracts tying everything together, like in the Craft Sequence but with spaceships.

Ironically, having magic be explicit with spaceships goes a long way to making the space opera more realistic in my mind, since there's no point handwaving with FTL drives and the like. It's magic.

A great followup to the first book, which was already quite lovely. Basically follows the original crew with new additions on their quest to try to deal with some of the fallout from the Harrow mission along with new contenders including a creepy new cult that has arisen. Like the first book, it has decent pacing, a joy to read, moments of pathos and still manages to capture a firefly-esque feeling as it is very much about the crew and their ability to work/stick together in the face insurmounta ...more

White's second novel in The Salvagers series continues the story of our favorite crew of heroes and their fight against the 'gods' of the galaxy. While not quite as good as the first volume, we do get a rip-roaring continuation of the story, some growth in our crew and two new members on top of that. I'm very much looking forward to seeing where the Capricious goes next in their quest to save everything.

What an amazing book! I love the crew of Capricious, every single one member is unique and hard not to like. In this installment we get even more adventure with battles, magic and a lot of badassery.

Not the best books, and everyone of the main characters sure do get messed up a lot-like they should realistically die in each book- but this is an entertaining story that moves at a great pace. I enjoy burning through the pages to find out what happens next. Bring on book 3.

Fantastic sequel! Yet again fast paced, great imagination accompanied with beautiful prose! I love how every character is well fleshed out and likable. The antagonists are evil and creepy at times!

The hardships and action is suspenseful and the groups dedication strong :D!

Even better than the first one, so 5 stars it is. If you liked the first book definitely read this one, and I will probably pre-order the next one. The page-count is off, as there are 2 pre-views in the back, an excerpt from the next book, and one of a another book. Do not really like that, as I have to stop reading and wait for the next part, and if it is an unpublished book, that is really not my thing.
Also for Kindle, remaining read time is often wrong (some ebooks do get it right, so there i
Just as good (maybe even better) than the first one. The stakes are higher, the enemies more dangerous, the romance more pronounced. I can't wait for the third book!
