'A fascinating book about a remarkable woman' The Times

Anne Lister was a Yorkshire heiress, an intrepid world traveller and a proud lesbian during a time when it was difficult simply to be female. She chose to remain unmarried, dressed all in black and spoke openly of her lack of interest in men. The first woman to climb Vignemale in the treacherous Pyrenees, she journeyed

Gentleman Jack is a biography of Anne Lister, Regency Yorkshire landowner known for her relationships with women and explicit diaries partly written in code. Full of quotations from her diaries, it is a good biography for anything looking for an introduction to Lister's life and what she wrote about in her diaries. Likely to be of most interest are her various relationships with women—often surprisingly openly for Regency society—and her interest in travel, scaling mountains and visiting countri ...more

Gentleman Jack was an interesting read on many levels—firstly, as a commentary on the life of a lesbian in the early 19th century, and secondly, as an account of a fascinating woman who did some amazing things in the course of her life. Anne Lister was certainly quite a character, and while I was intrigued by her romantic exploits, it was more her extensive travels that gripped me. This work shines a light on a little-known figure who deserves more recognition. The only reason I give this book f ...more

It's difficult to argue with the author's conclusion that Anne Lister was an egotistical fortune hunter, but her diaries are an invaluable historical document, disproving the homophobic argument that LGBT people are a modern phenomenon. This biography is a quick, informative read.

The premise of this book sounded so interesting but the execution fell far short. The author is German so perhaps it lost something in translation. I had never heard of Anne Lister so was even more intrigued by the book. Sadly I couldn't get with it at all. Found it far too repetitive.

An interesting biography, Gentleman Jack portrays the hard and fascinating life of Anne Lister, Yorkshire heiress and one of the first openly homosexual women of all times. Thoroughly detailed, the biography is based on Lister's personal diaries, much of which were coded as to not be read by the public at the time.

Angela Steidele has created an interesting book for the reader - although some more effort in the writing style would have gone a long way. Nevertheless, it was a good read, recommend

I did find this incredibly fascinating. It’s made me want to read her diaries! I’ve grown up in Halifax, and Anne Lister has always been a name I knew, but I never realised how deeply she was involved in so many things. I did find some of the points about Halifax & the geography hard to place in my head, and I live here, so I felt that maps would’ve helped with that!

If you are planning to watch the BBC dramatization of Anne Lister's life next year, you absolutely must read this biography. Even if you aren't planning to watch the series, you should definitely read this biography as Anne was fascinating, truly fascinating.

Chronological recounting of the diaries but lacked analytical sociological context. Interesting travelogue.

"She is another man’s wife. I am solitary."

The deeper I got into this book, the less I liked Anne Lister. To quote the author, she really is a beast of a woman. An egocentric, selfish social climber I truly could not see that she had any heartfelt feelings for anyone except for her namesake Aunt Anne. Even so, this isn't a book about being a good person, or even about love though I suspect that the BBC will sugarcoat the truth in an upcoming drama. Anne Lister was a woman who lived unashamedly t

Well, that was interesting. Bit of a contrast from the queer history stuff I've read so far: mostly I've been working with medieval material, where everything is theory and metaphor and speculation. Then you get Anne Lister, writing detailed journals about who she slept with and exactly what that entailed. It's... different.

Like Angela Steidele, I have to conclude that Anne is a "beast of a woman". Fascinating, but you have to feel sorry for the people around her, because she comes across as...
