Madeline Miller creates a fully fleshed-out first-person voice for Circe, bringing us into well-known myths and incidents from The Odyssey from her vantage point. Circe, although immortal, is on the lower rungs of the godling pecking-order, as the daughter of a Titan and a nymph, and a lot of novel's strength lies in her journey of navigating the whims and cruel (both to immortals of her status and especially to lowly mortals) power structures of the stronger deities whom she starts out in awe o ...more

I really do enjoy Miler's books. This book sucked me in right away with the cover. I saw it and couldn't stop thinking about it! I found out that there was a prequel to this book (which really isn't a prequel after all) and so I picked up that book. It's called Song of Achilles and is such a great book! Unfortunately, I didn't think this book was as good as that one. This one was much slower. What a book, what a book! Beautifully written and beautifully told. It's like a reverse picaresque novel where all the eccentrics and adventure wash up on the same remote shore. Mythological cameos galore! But Circe is no unchanging rogue and watching her transform from naive nymph to cynical witch to reluctant mother as she struggles to find herself in a world where one's role is so often fated is at times triumphant, heartbreaking, disturbing, and joyful.

Perfectly suited to flowing between the audiobook and Kindle editions; as lovely as Song of Achilles.

I read this book in an effort to branch into a new genre. I thought it was very well done but have decided Greek Mythology is not for me.
