Well... I picked this book back up a few times to try to just finish it but I'm finding my brain just can't handle the sheer amount of implausibility. I mean, I have a pretty strong ability to suspend disbelief but there is something about the ridiculous mechanics in this that make me unable to finish. I gave it a try though, which to me is the reason I belong to the Sword & Laser group, to try things I wouldn't have otherwise.

I read this just because the Peter Jackson movie adaptation is coming out. And I remember "hearing" (OK, reading) good things about it back when it came out. So, I really read it cold with know foreknowledge. Surprise 1, it's real YA target audience. Not a problem... I loved The Hunger Games, I loved The Queen of the Tearling, and this is a more steampunky/sci-fi-ish dystopia than those by a mile, so it made me happy. I think, deep down inside, I recall my own real YA reading life with the maste ...more

Rumor is that Philip Reeve’s novel is soon to be adapted for film by Peter Jackson. While the quartet is already popular, it’s going to take off. Reeve has imbued his book with plenty of the elements necessary to captivate young audiences. His premise begs for CGI: mechanized cities traveling a devastated world, larger ones physically devouring the smaller as fuel. London is an apex predator roaming the continent. The kids running about exhausted me. The world is interesting, with Frankenstein creatures and air ships and mysterious weapons from the past, and I can see how the movie will be great. But I should just give up on YA for a year or two.
