A mostly well-written and definitely ambitious start to this trilogy, but something about the characters fell flat for me. Fonda Lee does a lot of great work on the politics of this world, but I never came to care about any of the actual characters or their struggles. They all have intense personal journeys, yet I didn't come away from this story feeling invested in any of the characters; something about them all seemed a little two-dimensional.

Engaging with great world-building; it's the rare spec-fic book with a setting that actually feels like a well-thought out secondary world. Sure, it's fantasy 70's Hong Kong but the little details all create a very satisfying feeling of verisimilitude. For me, this one was hard to put down and I tore through it quickly. The prose is light and readable throughout. I like that the wuxia was held to Matrix 1 levels instead of Matrix 2 or 3, which let's fact it is just overkill.

bit of a drag really with characters half-developed and the plot line already too predictable by the first 50 pages or so; won't continue with the series

SO GOOD!!! The characters are well rounded and sympathetic, the story engaging, and the action well paced. Can't wait for the next book! Casino meets Jade Empire.

Vivid world building, many intricate characters who have crossing interests, and a good sense of past make this a great book. I am, however, a shallow person who prefers to naively cheer for the protagonists, and in this murky world of grey that's hard to do. Maybe these mobbish guys are slightly less evil than the other guys, but then again, maybe not.
