Michele | 1154 comments Today is the last day to register a membership and qualify to nominate/vote for the Hugos.

Finally, one in my hometown so I can attend without breaking the bank! Hope to meet many of you there!

terpkristin | 3665 comments I think you can still vote if you purchase later, but you can't nominate. That said, I actually did this yesterday, not because I realized how close the date was for the nominating process, but because I didn't want to forget to do it later. I also think people who were members for Worldcon 75 can nominate (at least that is how it worked for 75, because I didn't become a 75 member until March or something, but had been a 74 member).

So far, I've only purchased a supporting membership. I'm going to see how things are going this year with work and some health things going on, and if it looks like I'll be able to go, I'll upgrade my membership to attending.

John (Taloni) Taloni (JohnTaloni) | 2618 comments I'll be attending this Worldcon. Spider Robinson is scheduled to attend. He had to skip Westercon in 2015 due to some health issues and I'm really hoping he'll be there this time.

message 4: by John (Nevets) (new)

John (Nevets) Nevets (Nevets) | 994 comments Thanks for the reminder. I probably wont go, but it always feels good to vote as a supporting member.

message 5: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Richter (StephenofLongBeach) | 923 comments I do not know if I will attend. I did register as a supporting member just to stay as a nominating member and keep the door open. Still a six hour drive may be too good to pass up. I have that week off so it is a matter how much money can I save between now and than.

message 6: by Sky (new)

Sky Corbelli | 323 comments My wife and I will be there, it'll be our first vacation since our twins were born. We just started the planning phase for the shardplate and shardblade that we'll be making.

message 7: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Armstrong | 64 comments Just registered myself! My first Worldcon - really looking foward to it...

Michele | 1154 comments If you can vote, today is the last day.

Hmm. I'm debating if I should go. I was trying to get a buddy of mine to come, but he's not interested. Not sure I want to travel cross-country and go to a con alone..but with S&L nominated and some other S&L folks going it could be fun..

But if I do go, it sounds like I won't be able to vote for S&L anymore. :(

I think you can if you get a ticket? Actually, I have no idea-I'm a new member myself and not up on all the rules.

UPDATE: I found this on their website: "Only supporting and attending members of Worldcon 76 (and members with equivalent voting rights) who join the convention before the end of final ballot voting will be eligible to vote on the final ballot." (http://www.worldcon76.org/hugos). I think that means you have until the end of final ballot voting--July 31,2018--to be able to vote?

I did find out that the ballots should be sent out May 3rd, though: http://twitter.com/worldcon2018/stat...

You can still vote for the final ballot. It was the initial, get-on-the-ballot voting that ended in March.

I'm local, so I'll be going, and I'm thinking there will be at least one S&L meet-up.

My sister lives in SF, so I was thinking I could visit her/try to drag her along.

She doesn't own a car though, so commuting from SF probably isn't too practical.

message 16: by Michele (new)

Michele | 1154 comments It's maybe an hour each way (or more) depending on traffic to SF. I think it took me about an hour to get to SF for the bookclub meetings, less going home after traffic died down. I'm debating whether I should go with Lyft or drive myself and try to park - I'd love to have my car, but I'm expecting parking to be a nightmare.

There is Caltrain, the commuter train between the two cities, that takes maybe 90 minutes each way.

message 17: by John (Taloni) (new)

John (Taloni) Taloni (JohnTaloni) | 2618 comments I would rather drive to the convention from SoCal than fly, but am concerned about parking the thing while I'm there. Can't be cheap.

Mark (mmtz) | 1027 comments Hugo voting instructions were just sent out via email. Voting closes August 1 2018. Hugo packets are scheduled for release next week.

Vanessa Armstrong | 64 comments Ack. I didn’t receive anything in my email. Hopefully I can figure out how to follow up with them.

message 20: by Robert (new)

Robert Lee (harlock415) | 154 comments I received my voting instructions. I just need to read the nominated books. I'll be attending and staying at one of the con hotels in the area.

Vanessa Armstrong | 64 comments Does anyone know what the schedule is for WorldCon on Thursday?

I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth me coming up Thursday sometime versus Friday morning and can’t find details online. Any help appreciated!

message 22: by Stephen (last edited Jun 03, 2018 10:02PM) (new)

Stephen Richter (StephenofLongBeach) | 923 comments It is a tad early for any information, check the main website for when it is posted.
http://www.worldcon76.org/events-new

But yes it is worth going on Thursday if only to map the place out in your head. And head to the art show right away. I am still kicking myself for missing out on one painting that was well within my price range but sold out in both lithograph and the original art. I am sure there will be an app to download that will allow you to plan out your day. I was planning to go, but the hotels are to expensive to go solo and I do not know anybody else in the same situation. Hint, hint.

message 23: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Armstrong | 64 comments Thanks Stephen! I’m staying with a friend so luckily don’t need a hotel. If I can swing it work wise, I’ll try to come Thursday.

message 24: by Mark (new)

Mark (mmtz) | 1027 comments Hugo Award packets are available for download; twenty six separate ZIP files ranging in size from 11 to 249 MB. Most of the downloads are at the upper end in size. On my pokey DSL connection, I'll be downloading for days ;-P

Mark (mmtz) | 1027 comments Someone put up a Goodreads list of the 2018 Hugo finalists to see what you've read.

but it needs some additions

message 28: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 992 comments Mark, thanks for posting the list of contents of the voters package. I've always been curious. So apparently it is not complete for all works, since I see some books are only available in excerpts only. I wonder why.

message 29: by David (new)

David (farrakut) | 751 comments The trend of packets has only been around for a decade or so, and not every publisher is willing to give whole books (I know Tor is one of the ones that always gives everything--they even gave the whole Wheel of Time that one year, and I think Orbit or someone is one who will only do excerpts--and some don't participate at all). That's part of why it takes so long to get together as the Hugo committee has to ask everyone's publisher, etc., etc.

You're welcome Silvana. This is the first time I've signed up for Worldcon; just a supporting membership. Even though it isn't complete, it's an impressive set of books.

I haven't examined all the NetGalley titles yet, but those I've looked at have DRM and are time-limited. They require an ebook reader or app that handles DRM and they expire in August, after voting ends.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 992 comments There is a thread in JY Yang's Twitter that is quite shocking about the criteria of having a panel at Worldcon. http://twitter.com/halleluyang/statu...

Thoughts?

Vanessa Armstrong | 64 comments I'm glad they got Mary Robinette Kowal involved. Hopefully she can right the ship, though I know everything can't be 'fixed' in such a short timeframe.

And now we have an S&L Meetup scheduled for 2pm on Sunday at the Con!

RSVP here: http://gsbyvalentinoschoolwear.co.uk/event/show/...

Note: WorldCon site doesn't indicate if the Exhibit Hall is using Halls 1-3 or just one of them. For now, let's say we'll meet in front of Hall 1, as it appears on this map: http://www.sanjose.org/convention-ce...

message 36: by Robert (new)

Robert Lee (harlock415) | 154 comments If you come through the entrance and go up to the second level, the grand ballroom is there. It's where the Dealers and Art show is.

Jlawrence | 940 comments Mod
OK, we'll stick to meeting in front of Hall 1 (instead of switching to meeting in front of the Grand Ballroom) since Hall 1's is what's been on the meetup event page.

message 38: by Robert (new)

Robert Lee (harlock415) | 154 comments My mistake too, the grand ballroom is actually on the right. The Event Hall is all the Halls starting with A.

I am seriously considering attending the one in NZ (2020). Wonder if there will be lots of S&L folks there as well. Maybe some of the Aussies here could come too? :D
