So we're going to give this whole group read a try. I have no idea exactly how this works, or how much interest/participation we'll have so I'm going to

I've created two challenges:

Sword Challenge: 10,000 Fantasy Books
Laser Challenge: 10,000 Sci-Fi Books

People can/should join both if they want, or they can just join one side. We'll "compete" to see which challenge completes first.

Please only count books you've read primarily in 2018.

Also, we'd like to limit it to Novellas or longer (roughly 17,500 words/50 pages/2 hours).

Format doesn't matter (physical book, ebook, audio book).

Please no Graphic Novels. If there is enough interest, I can set up a separate challenge for Graphic Novels.

I'm not going to audit people's books, so please try to stick to the criteria of the challenges.

I have no idea how these numbers will hold up. Too high? Too low? It's largely going to depend on participation. We'll see how it goes.

terpkristin | 3665 comments My guess is that they're way too high but I'll be happy to be wrong. :)

message 3: by Trike (new)

Trike | 4913 comments Seems like it would work. I assume we’d have to add a shelf or shelves to our personal book lists to track this.

I’m going for “Cooperative Challenge” in that I’m going to count my reads in both columns. Right now I’m reading The Black Lung Captain, So that’s 1 for Sword. :)

Do graphic novels count? I’m guessing audiobooks will count.

I joined both and set 24 books for each Challenge.

Already 1 book added to Team Tom and in the middle of 2 more for Team Tom.
Sorry Veronica ;-) definitely will read a Sword or 2 after that :-)

I am interested in a Graphic novel challenge. I read at least 4 or 5 a month.

Yes, I have already added 2 shelves to my page. Use the same shelf names as you use in the sign up.

It automatically added the Laser book I had added to that shelf. (Started and finished this year)

When you join the challenge you make a separate bookshelf for that challenge. Just name it "2018 sword challenge" or whatever. It doesn't matter what it's called; it's just for your reference. Only books that are on that shelf AND have been marked as "read" (i.e. they are on your "read" bookshelf with a "date read" set in 2018) count toward the challenge.

Rob, the Challenge's are showing on both:

Total goal for all participants: 0 books
and we have 0 of 0 (0%)

message 10: by Trike (new)

Trike | 4913 comments I was hoping Goodreads started allowing special characters, so I named my shelves “2018-S&L-sword” and “2018-S&L-laser”, but they came out as “2018-s-l-sword” and “2018-s-l-laser”. Oh well, that works. I chose 15 books each.

I'm trying for 35 Sword, and 20 Laser books based on what I typically read I should hit both those numbers this year.

Everyone should do at least 6 of each and read all 12 S&L picks this year! :-P

There should be 2 on the Group totals list for the Laser Challenge.
Me and Brooke both have added 1 each.

My personal total shows 1 of 24 (4%)

The Sword challenge seems to be showing numbers now. Maybe it only updates every so often? Still nothing on Laser, maybe check back in a few. I created that one second..

message 15: by Tassie Dave, S&L Historian (new)

Tassie Dave | 2338 comments Mod
Yes, I see now. Sword 2 of 164.

The second number is where we should be, to be on target. That makes sense. You can tell it's my first challenge.

I'm thinking maybe I should drop from 10k to 2.5k.

But I'll probably wait until the next podcast to adjust as hopefully our fearless leaders will advertise the challenge to folks who don't frequent the forums that often.

Sean Lookielook Sandulak (SeanSandulak) | 408 comments Eric wrote: "Are group challenges new? This doesn't muck with my regular reading challenge?"

Yes the group challenges are new this year. You can do all three challenges and they don't interfere with each other. You just have to add the books you read to a separate bookshelf which is linked to the challenge to participate. Books can be on more than one bookshelf with the exception of the read, currently reading and want to read shelves which are exclusive of each other.

message 27: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd | 200 comments I will lend you my reads. Fun idea! I put a conservative estimate for fantasy, and a fairly realistic one for scifi. I was briefly worried I'd have to make wholly separate shelves, but it seems to have ported correctly from my pre-existing scifi and fantasy shelves. I'll do my best to exclude GNs until we get the count, but if I forget it will be a small number.

Eric Mesa (djotaku) | 591 comments Rob, while you're preferring started and ended in 2018, I'm curious if you'd mind books started in December? I've got the vast majority of a Sanderson book to read in 2018, so I feel OK about it, but don't want to wreck our fun here.

I'm not auditing. If you want to do that, you can if the challenge lets you.

I think for it count the date finished date has to be in the window I set (1/1/18-12/31/18) for each challenge, I'm not sure if start date matters.

When you finish, try adding that book to your shelf and if it counts towards your challenge then it counts. If not, then sorry.

Yeah, I don't think GR will care if it's like regular challenges. I usually have a few books spanning years if I start in December. It's the finish date that counts. At least that's how it's worked for me in the past.

Lauren (parnopaeus) | 45 comments I set my goal as 15 for each, but I've already run into the "holy cats is this book in the Sword or the Laser category???" with The Stone Sky. I put it in Sword, but even the descriptions online often call it a "science fantasy"! Oh well, glad we're not being audited!

message 33: by Rob, Roberator (new)

Rob (robzak) | 5267 comments Mod
I marked The Stone Sky Fantasy myself. I understand how some books can easily be considered both.

For that book in particular though, I saw a recent comment from Ms. Jemisin on Twitter that she's often miscategorized and simply writes Fantasy (not YA, or Urban Fantasy or Sci-Fi).

I don't see any permissions. Are you looking on the front page or clicking through to the actual challenge?

On the front page I only see my own numbers.

When I click through (ex: http://gsbyvalentinoschoolwear.co.uk/challenges/...) I first see:

Start Date: January 01, 2018
End Date: December 31, 2018
Total goal for all participants: 1,361 books

43 of 1,361 (3%)
Average goal for all participants: 21 books
Total challenges completed: 0

Then I see my own status:

You have read 1 book toward your goal of 35 books.

1 of 35 (3%)
Great work, you're on track!

This is followed by my friends participation in the challenge

and finally a list of everyone participating with their individual statuses.

I had assumed everyone saw that, but maybe not?

Oh, good. I was going crazy trying to find a setting I was missing, especially once Allison said she was having the issue too..

They must use the same view on the Challenge page as they do on the front page.

I get not showing the long list of users on the truncated view, but overall numbers don't take much space...
