Benedict Patrick (BenedictPatrick) | 4 comments For the past three years, international best-selling fantasy author Mark Lawrence has been running a massive competition (the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, or SPFBO for short) to highlight the cream of the indie fantasy crop. Earlier this week, the winner for SPFBO3 was announced, Rob J. Hayes' grimdark fantasy pirate extravaganza, Where Loyalties Lie.
As the competition - which involves almost 300 titles each year, reviewed by 10 bloggers, then eventually whittled down to a final 10 - lasts the best part of a year, today Mark has opened submissions for SPFBO4, which presumably will run until some time in summer 2019.
Previous winners of the SPFBO are Michael McClung's The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble's Braids, and Jonathan French's The Grey Bastards, which has been subsequently picked up by Penguin/Random House and will be republished traditionally this month. Other notable discoveries through the SPFBO include Josiah Bancroft’s Senlin Ascends, which was republished by Orbit earlier this year, and has been garnering rave reviews across the fantasy community.
