What were your favourite books of the 2018 Sword and Laser picks?

Jan- Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Feb- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Mar- An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
Apr- We Are Legion - We Are Bob by Dennis E. Taylor
May- Night's Master by Tanith Lee
Jun- Circe by Madeline Miller
Jul- Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve
Aug- Jade City by Fonda Lee
Sep- Slan by A.E. van Vogt
Oct- Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff
Nov- Zeroes by Chuck Wendig
Dec- Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr by John Crowley

My Top 3 Overall were:
An Unkindness of Ghosts
We are Legion (We are Bob)
Zer0es

As they are all Laser, they are my top 3 Laser books.

My Top 3 Sword Books were:
Jade City
Lovecraft Country
Circe

An Unkindness of Ghosts was a hard book to read at times, but it was a book I was still thinking about months later. Of all the books we read, it is the one I wish had a sequel.

We are Legion (We are Bob) was the most fun book we read this year. I went on to read the sequels immediately. Great concept. Great story.

message 3: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd | 200 comments The only one of these I've read that got a 5 star from me was Jade City (represent, Dara!)

I also found An Unkindness of Ghosts and Night's Master to be very compelling, though both were difficult to read in several instances. They both were atmospheric, and different from other books I've read in similar veins.

Sheila Jean | 112 comments An Unkindness of Ghosts is my top pick for 2018.

Fun factor reads were Mortal Engines, We are Legion - We are Bob, and Zer0es

message 6: by Phil (new)

Phil | 1023 comments I gave 5 stars to We Are Legion - We Are Bob, and 4 stars to Lovecraft Country and Frankenstein.
Everything else got 2 or 3 stars except Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr which got 1.

message 7: by Raucous (new)

Raucous | 20 comments We Are Legion - We Are Bob followed by Night's Master and Slan. I seem to have Lemmed or not even started a surprising number of this year's picks though. I need to get with the reading diversity program...

message 8: by Leesa (new)

Leesa (leesalogic) | 528 comments My two five star ratings were A Wrinkle in Time (I own the paperback, ebook, audiobook, and graphic novel) and Lovecraft Country (I loved the audiobook but also picked up the ebook so I could reference key points more easily).

I did not finish Jade City but will come back to it. I think this is one I need to read in print rather than audio.

I did not finish and will not pick up again Night Master (just way too gross and too much about humans doing terrible things to each other and animals) and Slan (I can't get over the "poor me, superior human so persecuted" and the eugenics angle).

I'm not done with Ka, but I'm liking it quite a bit.

message 12: by Minsta (new)

Minsta | 57 comments I had a good summer because my two favorites were the July and August picks: Mortal Engines and Jade City. Third place was Frankenstein which I thought was much better than the movie adaptations.

Iain Bertram (Iain_Bertram) | 605 comments For me I preferred the sword picks...

Frankenstein
Lovecraft Country

Followed by An Unkindness of Ghosts.

message 14: by Melani (new)

Melani | 84 comments Lovecraft Country followed closely by Circe.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments Hmm, haven't read everything this year, and I didn't enjoy the picks as much as usual - I think I just wasn't in the right mood at the right time for most of them. I've been 'off' in general, though, so that's just me. Jade City, for example, had lots to love - I definitely want to read the sequel - but I felt like I should have loved it more than I did. It had great characters and an interesting story that did things differently to how I might have expected. Circe was also great, but strangely left me empty. I liked reading it and meeting all those people from myths I love, but..ah... I don't know.

So I'd say my favourite was An Unkindness of Ghosts, because it was terrible and sad and difficult enough to touch me even though I've been somewhat absent from myself and everything around me. I do not think I would like to read that book again, but it made an impression.

message 16: by Phillip (last edited Dec 27, 2018 03:29PM) (new)

Phillip Murrell | 81 comments We are Legion We are Bob was my favorite. I ended up reading the full trilogy. After that, I enjoyed Jade City.

Jessica (J-Boo) | 207 comments My full ranked list (of the 10 I read):

1. Jade City
2. Lovecraft Country
3. Circe
4. Zeroes
5. An Unkindness of Ghosts
6. Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr
7. We Are Legion - We Are Bob
8. Night's Master (I had already read this one and did not reread with the group, and although I love a lot of Tanith Lee's work, this one was not one of my favorites)
9. Mortal Engines (I actively disliked this one)
10. Slan (I also really disliked this one)

I read A WRINKLE IN TIME in grade school, but couldn't judge it without rereading it now - which I didn't when the group read it

This got me curious, so I decided to do my own stats.

For context I started reading with the group in August of 2012. I had lurked a bit before then, but I didn't actively start reading with the group until then. In general I try to read all the main picks, and will read an alt pick if I've already read the main pick.

2007: 3/3 (100%) - Average Rating: 4 stars
2008: 2/6 (33%) - Average Rating: 3.5 stars
2009: 4/6 (67%) - Average Rating: 4.5 stars
2010: 1/9 (11%) - Average Rating: 4 stars
2011: 7/12 (58%) - Average Rating: 4 stars
2012: 10/12 (83%) - Average Rating: 4 stars
2013: 13/14 (93%) - Average Rating: 3.5 stars
2014: 12/13 (92%) - Average Rating: 3.5 stars
2015: 12/12 (100%) - Average Rating: 3.5 stars
2016: 13/13 (100%) - Average Rating: 3 stars
2017: 12/12 (100%) - Average Rating: 3 stars
2018: 12/12 (100%) - Average Rating: 3 stars
2019: 1/1 (100%) - Average Rating: 4 stars

102/125 (82%) - Average Rating: 3.5 stars

So apparently the last 3 years have been down from my average of 3.5 stars. There have been a lot of 2 star reads for me in those years, and this year got me my first ever 1 star (Night's Master) and it was almost my first Lem ever.

Breaking it down by rating I have:

5 Star Reads: 9
4 Star Reads: 46
3 Star Reads: 32
2 Star Reads: 14
1 Star Reads: 1

I'm not interested in getting to 100% completion though. At best I'll add another 10 more books to total, leaving me with 13 unread.

Currently Reading (1): Watership Down
Owned and Unread (7): Anathem, Forever War, Princess Bride, Once & Future King, 100k Kingdoms, Empire State, His Majesty's Dragon
Interested but Don't Own (2): Down & Out in the Magic Kingdom, Shadow & Claw

Iain Bertram (Iain_Bertram) | 605 comments My reading over the years (despite joining in 2016) is:

2007 3/3
2008 5/6
2009 4/6
2010 4/5
2011 6/12
2012 6/12
2013 9/14
2014 6/13
2015 9/12 75% (joined half way through year)
2016 12/13 92.3% (I attempted and lemmed before the end)
2017 12/12 100%
2018 12/12 100%

Total 94/125 (75.2%)

Don't think I will ever read 100% as there are a few books I don't dare start reading (Wheel of Time for one).

Jessica (J-Boo) | 207 comments Ooh, let me try the overall stats as well. I joined in April 2016, so any books before then are ones I happened to read on my own.

2007: 1/3 - 3 stars (although overall, HIS DARK MATERIALS is one of my all-time favorites trilogies - I just thought the first book was the weakest)
2008: 0/6 - eep!
2009: 4/6 - average rating 3.5 stars
2010: 2/9 - both rated 3 stars
2011: 2/12 - average rating 3.5 stars
2012: 4/12 - average rating 3 stars
2013: 2/14 - this includes my first 1 star rating for an S&L book - I despised WOOL!
2014: 5/13 - average rating 2.8 stars, with THE MARTIAN being the only one rated above 3 stars
2015: 5/12 - average rating 3.5, plus I am currently reading and enjoying THE TRAITOR BARU CORMORANT
2016: 8/13 - average rating of 3 (A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC was 5 for me, but THE TIME TRADERS pulled it back down with a 1)
2017: 3/12, oof - each earned 3 stars from me
2018: 12/13 - average rating 2.9 stars
2019: 1/1 - rated 3 stars

Overall it really looks likes there is a good spread of books each year, some that are 5 star reads for me, and some that are 1, and always averaging in that 3 star range.

As for the breakdown:

5 star reads: 2
4 star reads: 9
3 star reads: 28
2 star reads: 4
1 star reads: 4

I was lucky that I found S&L early. They were just about to start book 10: Wheel of Time. So I only had 9 books to go back and read.

I've read every book since (including alts)

Lemming is not an option for me. The reason I joined the book club was to challenge myself to read books I, possibly, wouldn't choose myself.

Ian Seal (Rebel-Geek) | 85 comments Can we do a poll for the favorite pick of 2018? Bob!
I only read 5 of the picks. Some of them late because I had to wait to get it. Lovecraft Country was the only Sword pick I read.
I only listen to audiobooks nowadays.
I mainly get them from Libby, although I used Audible for Frankenstein (Simon Vance) & the Bobiverse books (they’re exclusives).
I Lemmed Mortal Engines (I plan to see the movie & I might try it again), An Unkindness of Ghosts, & Circe.
A goal for 2019: Read all S&L picks if audiobook is available from the library & no lemming of picks.

Oh, I try every book. And for the most part work through them if I can. Sometimes, for whatever reason, there are books I cannot finish. I only started lemming books in the last five years after realising I cannot read all the books and life is too short.

That's what this thread is. Sort of.

Letting people choose more than 1 book gives a better view of what the book club enjoyed.

There are books mentioned several times above, that very few, if any, people ranked number 1

But I see the poll is up already. It will be interesting to see what people vote for.

I think it's worth having both a poll and a discussion thread. If not for the thread I wouldn't have spent way too much time at work calculating statistics about my S&L reading history. 😁

message 35: by terpkristin (last edited Dec 29, 2018 03:27AM) (new)

terpkristin | 3665 comments 2018 was a down year for me. The highest I rated any S&L book is 5 stars for A Wrinkle in Time, but I don't feel like that counts, since I'd read it before and knew what I was getting into (and would have re-read it anyway owing to the movie coming out).

After that, it was 3 stars for Circe.

Continuing down the ratings list, the following were 2 stars:
Lovecraft Country
Night's Master
Slan
Mortal Engines
An Unkindness of Ghosts
Jade City
We Are Legion - We Are Bob

Frankenstein was rated 1 star, which I knew it would be (I didn't like it the first time I read it, either).

Zeroes is a book that I've read 2 chapters of and not returned to. I intend to try at some point, and if doesn't work, I'll move it to my "abandoned" shelf. That shelf is where Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr landed.

I really hope 2019 will be better, but I'll note that none of the options for the January book excited me, so I abstained from voting. I've procured Ninefox Gambit but am not really looking forward to it.

message 36: by John (Taloni) (new)

John (Taloni) Taloni (JohnTaloni) | 2618 comments For me the Bobiverse was far and away the best S&L pick of the year.

From there it's hard to classify. Slan was the best "nostalgia" pick. I like Wrinkle in Time but it's more a fairy tale than SF. Frankenstein hits the "duty read" category solidly. Read it once, it's important for SF history, but I had to struggle through the first time and didn't read it again.

Among the new works, Jade City was the sneaky, never-heard-of-it-before best pick. That's among the reasons I like the book club idea. Would likely not have read it otherwise and it was a surprisingly good read.

Lovecraft Country and Mortal Engines, both good reads for different reasons. Also books I wouldn't have read otherwise.

I trail off hard from there. One I barely finished, one I didn't, some I didn't bother to try. I don't like to slam book club picks, if I don't like them I prefer to move aside and let others enjoy. We're all opt-in here.

Completely agree. I stopped reading at the rape/pedophilia.

I also lemmed Jade City and Ka.

My favorites were:
1. Circe
2. Frankenstein
3. Mortal Engines
4. Zeroes

message 38: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 298 comments For me the books fall into several groups:
Read before (and enjoyed reading again) : Mortal Engines, Frankenstein
Loved: Circe, Jade City, Lovecraft Country
Found difficult at times but worth reading: An Unkindness of Ghosts, Ka
Lemmed quickly or never even started: Slan, Night’s Master
Kinda meh: Zeroes, Bob, A Wrinkle in Time

Looking back over the year, it’s interesting how time affects my perceptions of the books. I really enjoyed reading Zeroes and yet only a month later I’m feeling kinda meh about it, while An Unkindness of Ghosts was back in March and has stayed in my mind.

Adelaide Blair | 100 comments I had an off year as far as book club picks go.

I only finished:
1) Circe
2) An Unkindness of Ghosts

Both of which I quite liked. (Circe just a little bit more.)

I had already read and enjoyed:
Frankenstein
A Wrinkle in Time
Lovecraft Country

I started the other books, but did not finish. They weren't for me, and there is nothing more depressing to me than reading a book I dislike. It makes me not want to read at all.

Stephen Richter (StephenofLongBeach) | 923 comments My top two are Circe and We Are Legion - We Are Bob. 5 stars for both. Everything else was a 3 star month although Jade City was a 3 star with the ability to move with a successful sequel.
