terpkristin | 3665 comments I know we have a few threads for individual Daily Deals, but figured I'd create one more generically and people can post if it's something that sounds like it might be up the Sword and Laser contingent's alley.

The Daily Deal for 20 November is a book called MetaGame. It sounds kind of science fiction-y and thriller-y. In all honesty, it sounds like it involves a virtual game world in a way that Neal Stephenson could have done in Reamde but didn't. It's 99 cents and also it's available as one of the free "rentals" for Prime members. I'm going to grab it!

terpkristin | 3665 comments Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night is the daily deal for 27 November. Seems science fiction-y. From Amazon: "Best known now by the Nick Nolte film of the same name, Kurt Vonnegut's dazzling narrative explores the concept of false or shifting identities. The odyssey of its protagonist, Howard Campbell, Jr. is a paradigm of conflicting loyalties, ambiguous commitment, and personal compromise."

It's 99 cents today.

terpkristin | 3665 comments Today's deal may be of interest to some here, seems sword-y. It's a free "borrow" for Prime members or 99 cents for all to buy. Amazon Link: Against the Light

Against the Light (GR link)
From Amazon, "The Hierarchy, high priests of the religious order the Light, has installed King Ethan as the monarchical figurehead, ruling both the magical kingdom of Albi and its predominant religion. Scattered throughout the land, worshippers in the old ways of the Earth Mother are persecuted as heretics. And when young missionary student Rollo Woodbridge returns home to Albi, he is immediately arrested for heresy and treason, setting off a chain of events that plunges the land into utter chaos.

The Hierarchy has more treacherous motives, however, and when Rollo is rescued from jail, his family’s home is destroyed—but Rollo and his siblings are left alive. While Rollo tries diplomacy to end the religious and political conflict, his brother and sister swear vengeance. With the hours to deliverance counting down and their lives hanging in the balance, they must decide whether to stay and fight or leave Albi forever in the suspenseful, action-packed Against the Light."

Speaking as a developer, why would you need one? Everything we use is pretty much part of goodreads. Everything else is in a rss feed.

terpkristin | 3665 comments Zero Sight by B. Justin Shier is today's deal. It looks like it's a modern fantasy book, though does involve a "magical training academy." Amazon says it might not be appropriate for readers under 16. It's 99 cents today, normally 3.99. The sequel (not sure how many books will be in the series) is also 3.99. Might be interesting to some folks here. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004UB2...

message 12: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 3665 comments Today's deal is a selection of dystopian YA novels, each $1.99. Looks like 5 books offered:
The Scorpio Races by Stiefvater
The Eleventh Plague by Hirsch
Green Heart by Alice
Ashes, Ashes by Treggiari
Empty by Weyn

Nick (Whyzen) | 1292 comments Is the Kindle Daily Deal still a deal when I can't read it because I've bought so many other daily deals that I can't keep up?

message 14: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 3665 comments For me, it's a deal for my queue. ;)

message 15: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 3665 comments Today's (28 March) book is another that people might like. Each of the books in the Chaos Walking trilogy is 99 cents. Amazon's description: "Teenager Todd Hewitt's world is defined by the Noise germ, a plague that supposedly killed all women and gave the surviving men an ability to hear other's thoughts. The Chaos Walking trilogy chronicles Todd's coming-of-age journey through this post-apocalyptic landscape that's further shattered after he meets an eerily silent creature: a girl." The Daily Deal email described it as dystopian fantasy. Anyway...

terpkristin | 3665 comments Saw on Lifehacker today, there's a website that seems to cull a list of Kindle freebies on Amazon, "Zero Dollar Books." Might be interesting to some, though it looks a little user-unfriendly. http://ctrlq.org/amazon/ebooks/

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments It's interesting that the daily deal is different in the US and UK. We had the Mongoliad a while back, and something different now. Hmmm, since the co.uk daily deal is 99p and the .com one is 99 - ...um...cents? Drat, how do I not know how to write that? - the .com one is a slightly better deal. Enjoy the price marginal difference, .com people! :P

Darnit beat me to it, I was going to post this! I picked it up. At 99 cents I won't be too annoyed if I hate it.

If there were only a site that sorted out all the "romance" novels. That would make finding the wheat amongst the chaff so much easier.

99 cents for The Mongoliad? I had a hard time thinking of a reason why not to buy it. I had an impression it was a collection of short stories, but it seems not to be.

I like to use http://www.ereaderiq.com/ myself. It's a great site. Not only does it keep track of the freebies, but you can sort them by genre. Apart from that, they also keep track of price drops. You can create a list of books you want (but consider too expensive) and you'll be notified when the price goes down.

And while most of these sort of websites are for an American audience, this one allows you to set the region, so you only see the freebies that are actually free in the region you live in. Same for price drops.

I hear the follow up "Cotton" is really awesome. ... Badumbum!!!

Ctgt | 322 comments I loved "Wool". You might as well buy the omnibus, the first three parts are pretty short.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments If anyone is reading the Septimus Heap series, book 6 is today's daily deal for £1.29 at co.uk

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.ht...

Seems a shoddy deal to me, since it isn't the first in the series and is more than the usual 99p, but I thought maybe there were people on here who might be interested. :)

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments Interesting looking one for the daily deal uk.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.ht...

Though I'm wondering what happened to the usual 99p deal. Oh well.

terpkristin | 3665 comments The deal in the US is The Naming for $1.99. Looks kinda sword-y. http://www.amazon.com/The-Naming-Pell...

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments Not a daily deal, but there is a special offer on a sci-fi book called 'Further: Beyond the threshold' at co.uk. It's available for £1.99 till June 11th.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/re...

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments 'Megacatastrophes!' by Dr David Darling and Dr Dirk Schulze-Makuch is the daily deal for .co.uk It seems to be a light hearted look at the many different disasters that could afflict the human race in the future, which seemed like it might be appropriate for this group. It's selling for £1.19

Walrus | 80 comments +Ruth, that is a great tip. Keep in mind 1 English Pound is equal to about 2 USA Dollars.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 1406 comments Something like that, thanks Walrus.

Oh, and I meant to include the link too. Here it is:

Walrus | 80 comments +Ruth OK I looked it up. The book is currently $1.85. If it holds out till pay day, tomorrow, I'm snapping it up. It looks quite interesting.

:) As I type, there's 8 hours and 28 mins left till the offer ends.

message 50: by Walrus (new)

Walrus | 80 comments +Ruth that is too bad for me. It is 3:35 in London. So that makes it harder.

Looks like I'm reading 2312.

I really want to test out Google Play Books, I am likely going to turn off my Verizon for a month, and I'm willing to spend money to find out if the books stay with me. I'll test it first, it works that way with Kindle, so it should stay on my SD card just fine.
